Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school has a long history of educating our neighborhood. Our students are a mix of African American, Hispanic as well as students who have come to us from all over the world including new arrivals just learning the language and customs. We are a small school in a lower income neighborhood but as a teacher I have always made an effort to provide new learning experiences for the students in my art classes.
Our students have limited exposure to cultural experiences and artistic forms of expression.
As an art teacher I believe my students deserve access to different cultures, ways of thinking and forms of expression. When my students create a work of art they are also aware of the people who work in the same way and the artist and cultures that inspire them. In this way their lives are enriched and they may go on to use those skills to enrich their neighbors and community.
My Project
In any art class it is always far easier to deal in two-dimensions. There is always magic in pulling out an empty sheet of paper a few crayons and pencil and the limitless magic of imagination. However a big part of the arts and art education is sculpture which as some have put it, is more true to life. We are three-dimensional beings and live in a three-dimensional world and often the concept of "3D" escapes out students. Moreover, when we infuse sculpture into our classrooms it is often through found objects and constructions using discarded materials.
I wanted my students to have a powerful art experience using polymer clay, an oven baking clay which never dries making easier for kids to use but with great results.
It is often used not only in commercial sculpture but also as a basis for animation and other digital twenty-first century arts.
With polymer clay both white and colored as well as portable clay ovens they can not only learn the concepts of sculpture but how three-dimensional arts can provide opportunities for them in the future.
