Sculpting Our Love of Animals

My students need clay, glaze, and firing cones to create sculptures of their favorite animals.

My Students

My students are bright and cheerful kindergarten through fifth graders who come to me each week for art. They know that learning is important, but they look forward to escaping academics in my classroom. I teach in an inner-city classroom where most of the families are from a low socio-economic background where they struggle to pay for necessities. Luxury items like art supplies fall way down the shopping list.

My students come in ready to do fun art projects and never realize all the learning they are doing while they are with me.

I get students who have never held scissors, do not know how to glue, and have only really drawn in their classroom. For some of my students, holding a pencil or a crayon is still a very new experience.

My Project

The science room is directly across the hall from my art room. When classes are coming and going, they see the class rabbit hopping around (and sometimes trying to escape into the hallway). The students absolutely love the animals in the science room, and they learn what it takes to care for them and how much of a commitment it is to get a pet.

I would like to take the students love of animals and bring it into my art class.

The students will be sculpting their favorite domesticated animals out of clay for us to fire in our kiln. While we are creating the animals, our conversations will focus on what needs the animal has. We will team up with the Language Arts classroom to write a short paper about their chosen animal and what it takes to care for one as a pet.
