This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Knees weak. Palms Sweaty. Heart Racing. Do you remember what it was like to speak in front of a crowd for the first time? My theater students do, and it is something they will be remember for a long time! Help them create more memories-- even better ones-- to last them for a lifetime.

My theater students are enthusiastic, hard working, yet very timid.

Since many high schools and colleges require a visual and performing arts credit, many students are placed in my theater arts classes unwillingly because of the lack of elective options. Although they are shy, timid, and very reserved at first, they soon warm up and become comfortable with the class. The students develop close bonds, and become willing to take risks and trust one another.

My Project

The trouble is, when we get to that point of trust and comfort, I am scrambling to find relevant and thought-provoking scripts for the students to engage in. When the funds for all general education classrooms seem to be decreasing, the funds for all elective art classrooms seems to be completely nonexistent! My theater students need this basic resource to completely immerse themselves in the art. With these scripts the students will get a chance to read several one act plays from the book and perform multiple versions-- on stage and on film-- from respected authors like Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neill. We would no longer have to make copy after copy; we can each hold a book!

In addition to bringing these scripts directly to the hands of my students, these scripts can be viewed as a stepping stone to building a strong drama program for the members of this community.

Many of the students are currently classified as low-income and “at –risk”. Bringing and arts program to our school site is not an option, is it a necessity. It provides the students with an alternative means to express themselves and an additional extra-curricular program to be involved in.
