This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At my art high school in the Bronx, students site fashion as one of their top career interests. Many students would like to design and print their own t-shirts, but we currently don't have the equipment!

The Bronx High School for the Visual Arts is a special small school in the Bronx where students feel safe to express themselves while working towards their diplomas. Many students design and wear their own hand-made clothes and costumes to school without fear of taunting from their peers. As an art teacher, I planed a unit in which my 11th grade students designed t-shirts and ironed them on, but the designs quickly fell apart in the washing machine and dryer. We need a new way to print their designs.

The solution is a screen printing kit so that students can print their own t-shirts directly onto fabric using screens, emulsifiers, inks, and brayers. We are even purchasing an instructional video so all students can get involved.

Making t-shirts means students learn skills which they can use while applying to art schools or starting their own businesses. They will apply knowledge gained in my computer design and studio art lessons. The opportunity to learn this exciting new skill will provide a much needed spark to their school day and result in better student engagement and success.
