Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
Students have been on a screen for over a year, learning and playing. With TV, movies, tablets, phones, and car DVD players, children have become accustomed to tuning in to media and tuning the world out.
As we return to school, I am completely eliminating screen time in the classroom.
However, this poses potential problems. In order to meet the needs of my students, I have to provide 5 different levels of learning to 14 students in my room and another 13 on distance learning. And I only have four hours to do it.
This system has several independent activities - allowing students to play a game without touching anyone or sharing anything. But most importantly, NO screens!
Our district invested in several technology apps to aid in reading and math, but there is no replacement for hands-on learning. Unfortunately, COVID has eliminated nearly all of these activities since they are usually communal like puzzles and math tools.
Now, students will keep an activity in their personal boxes and use them throughout the week. Then, I can "quarantine" them for a week, then disinfect and redistribute for another week of fun!
Since I only have 14 students in the classroom at this time, I only need one unit to accommodate them! Help me fight the war against the digital babysitters!
