My Project
I am a New York City public school educator. I am a part of a district which is a cohort of many schools across our city and has the highest amount of special needs students. Our district is specifically designed to educate students with disabilities. My students have Autism and multiple disabilities. They are also economically disadvantaged. Our district works a 12-month program, so it is essential to have appropriate educational materials and curriculum to support them and meet their individualized learning needs.
Students often come to us with many struggles, I want their education to be fun and exciting.
I teach students with disabilities, and 100% of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. I am working to create a space where students can feel safe and represented. I want to see how my students can learn and grow.
My students are some of the most disadvantaged students in New York. I want to ensure that we can meet their needs and encourage their learning to move further.
Many times students come into classrooms and reading is a struggle. Finding literature that my students like can be difficult because of their varied levels and many times it has us relying on technology and taking away the fun from just listening to a book and using your imagination or doing a read-aloud to the class. The tonies provide a screen-free environment to listen to and enjoy their literature for students who are unable to read. The literature provides the models that follow along with the stories on the tonies. These books and tonies will provide students with enriching experiences that are foundational to their growth and support a love of reading and learning.
