Scratchy, Squeaky, Dirty Floors Are No Fun in Art Class!
My students need a class set of Chair Sox (tennis balls for the chair and desk feet).

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember the way the classroom looked on your first day back to school? Clean, shiny floors at the beginning of school? Nice, right? Then try to remember the floor after winter break, or spring break? They get Dirty! Not only does our chairs it make our floor dirty but the noise is distracting.
I am an art teacher at an elementary school in beautiful Nevada.
The school that I teach at is a high at-risk school. I see about 975 students from various kindergarten though grade five every week. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch where every child eats for free. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian (White) and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.
My Project
Think back to the screeching, squeaking, scraping noise of sliding chairs in and out of the seat, and stacking them on the desk at the end of the day, you'll remember the annoying, ear-splitting, and skin-crawling feeling that we experience daily. But beyond the noise is the state of the floor. Our chairs have metal feet, the floors get torn up within a couple weeks and by the end of the year, you can hardly tell what color it was. Then the custodians are hard back at it, trying to undo the damage. I am requesting Chair Sox for all the chairs and tables in my classroom.
Chair Sox are like tennis balls, but thicker and designed specifically for classrooms. They have a slot cut into them so the chair or table leg fits in, then the rubberized felt material is what comes in contact with the floor, not the metal feet. They can be re-used, too.
I'd like to make the classroom a nice, clean, comfortable environment for everyone who is in it.
The kids like and deserve a clean, quiet floor. The custodians have enough to do without needless wear on the floors to contend with. Even the regular mopping isn't enough to deal with the scrapes from the chairs. The school can't afford the replace the floors or the chairs right now. This is the most cost-effective solution to this problem that I could find.
