Scratchboard Art for Distance Learning!

Help me give my students scratchboards and engraving tools to create beautiful scratchboard artwork!

My Students

Our high school students are very creative and for many of them this it their first experience with the fine arts. Our student body is extremely academically motivated, despite the challenges many students have in terms of socio-economics and second language acquisition.

Our diverse art classes serve the entire student body, particularly students enrolled in the special education program and English language learners.

As we create incredible artwork, we also build a positive community in our visual art classes where students support and encourage each other. Through the visual arts program, students are able to thrive and achieve their full potential.

My Project

With distance learning in full effect, it's a challenge to plan dynamic and engaging art projects with limited materials that students will pick up at school and complete at home.

Working within these limitations, scratchboard art is a fantastic take-home project that students can dive into and express their creativity.

It is also wonderful change from traditional drawing with a pencil and paper. Scratchboard is a unique material in which students carve through a layer of black ink to reveal the white surface below. This is incredibly engaging and challenging for students, because they have to think about the positive and negative space they create by scratching through the different layers of material.

With these requested materials, students will feel like they are back in classroom, creating unique and original artwork!
