My Project

Scratchboard art is a project I teach to my students to encourage them to think differently, as well as explore new tools and materials. Scratch art forces young artists to understand how value and the use of highlights and shadows in a composition can make a work of art look more realistic. Students also learn about the importance of using different techniques to create value, as well as how these tenchiques (hatching, crosshatching, blanding, scrumbling, stippling, etc.) can affect an image. This project helps students understand how variation in textures and value can be used to create visual interest through contrast.
