My Students
Are you one of the millions of people who enjoy scrap booking or even just looking at a scrapbook? Scrap booking is a fun and age appropriate hobby for students with special needs. During that fun, students work on fine motor and communication skills as well as remembering events from the past.
The students in my class come from varied backgrounds and from many neighboring communities to be educated in the least restrictive environment in a public high school.
They are vibrant teenagers and are full of personality. They also face multiple or significant special needs such as cerebral palsy, autism, Rett syndrome or acquired brain injury. All of the students have communication, developmental and physical disabilities. Yet they love the same hobbies and activities we all do, including scrap booking!
My Project
With your donation of scrap booking materials including albums, paper, glue, ribbon, adapted scissors, embellishments. as well as paper cutters and crimpers, my students will be able to participate in the age appropriate activity of making a scrapbook. They will also get to work on skills from fine motor and hand skills to communication and choice making. In the end they will have a record of their school year that they have created themselves.
Without the ability to communicate through speech, my students often seem to be less connected to their pasts.
They have no way to tell about that time they went on a field trip or the cooking class when the cake batter flew everywhere. A scrapbook is a solution to that. Repetitive drills on hand skills or communicating are boring, but scrap booking is fun! Scrapbooks will give my students a chance to do so much more than make a memory book!
