My Students
Every day in our classroom is full of fun, excitement, and eager students ready to learn. We start each day with math workshops where students are collaborating, problem solving, and learning. I would like for my students to have the ability to choose how and where they would like to learn.
Our students come from a large yet rural military community with a variety of different social and cultural backgrounds.
Many of our students also come from economically disadvantaged homes and will attend several different elementary schools. Even with major obstacles and instability in their way, our students are eager learners and are excited about their future.
My Project
Creating a positive learning environment is very important to student success, and it has to meet the needs of all students. Flexible seating is one way I can meet the need of each student individually. Currently I have some students who prefer to stand, others who like to sit on the floor, some who like to sit in my office chair. When I get home from work I like to sit on the sofa to grade papers, plan lessons, and write DonorsChoose.org grants. I want my students to have the same options as they enter every day to learn. Many of my second graders also have a hard time sitting still. The Hokki stools will give them the ability to move while staying on task to complete their work.
Research has concluded that individuals entering the work force have a difficult time collaborating and working with others.
I believe it's because traditionally we ask our students to work independently the majority of the time. Our classrooms don't promote the idea of teamwork, socialization, and peer problem solving. This project will help young learners to gain much need skills which will carry them throughout their entire life just by changing how our students are arranged every day.
