I teach 8th grade Language Arts in a rural community. My students are spectacular. We have class sizes of about 23 students. I think the students at our school are some of the most respectful kids you would ever meet.
Learning can be FUN!!! I remember having "Scrabble Days" when I was in school. We would play a couple of students and it was something we looked forward to--a break from the typical note-taking, at your desk routine. We would earn BONUS points for using any spelling or vocabulary word we had that year as well. This was an experience I vividly remember from middle school. I want my students to experience fun with vocabulary and spelling. I want them to be able to practice with words and discuss with each other the definitions and origins of the words, while having a good time. There is no money to support such a purchase. We are a low-income school without any extra funds to put towards Scrabble boards for the kids.
By purchasing a few boards for the classroom, every kid will get a chance to participate in Scrabble Day. They will each get to feel the rush of competition, while at the same time, advancing their vocabulary and spelling skills. If you have ever watched a game of Scrabble you see the discussion and the debate of words. You see dictionary skills to "prove it". You see the learning of new terms at any age level... all while having fun.
Your help will make it possible for the students at our school to participate in Scrabble Days. You can ensure that they improve their vocabulary and spelling. You can help show them that learning can be fun!
