My Students

My students are a varied bunch with personalities to match. I love working with 6th-grade students because they are witty, are creative thinkers, and are enthusiastic with new ideas. Having students create poetry, develop an idea for a group project, or figure out how to illustrate something that isn't easy to illustrate, are all wonderful eye-opening experiences for them and me.

A cool aspect of working with sixth graders is that they are still in wonder with the world and learning.

I like every year coming up with new ideas for them to express themselves as they continue to learn. Whether it's classroom discussion or debate, written words or illustrated posters, my students are constantly creating in an effort to learn.

My Project

A subscription to Scope will help my students develop and strengthen their reading and writing skills. Although we have a wonderful ELA curriculum at our school, it is primarily online. I feel it is still important for students to look at magazines and books, as well as practice writing with pencil to paper. Both complement each other well, and will only benefit and build student skills.

Several areas of development will include close reading of texts, argumentative writing practice, and grammar analysis.

There are essay challenges to win books and opportunities to evaluate persuasiveness of speeches. The magazine can be used throughout a month of teaching and enhancing students learning experience with fiction and nonfiction.
