Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the pleasure of working at a high school with a dual mission that emphasizes rigorous academics and the arts where my photography students hail from every corner of the City of Los Angeles. We organize art exhibitions all year as part of the educational program and our students win more Scholastic Art Awards than any school in the Western United States.
The two hundred and fifty ethnically diverse 9th-12th graders I work with each year all have a passion for the visual arts, but are predominantly low income and unable to purchase their own art supplies.
Seventy percent of our students are low income and qualify for a free or reduced fee lunch.
My Project
In my Digital Imaging, Photography 1, Photography 2, and AP 2D Design courses, students are taught traditional 35mm photography and darkroom techniques. Although we have cameras and access to darkroom facilities year round, my school lacks funding to buy many of the other supplies necessary to support the photography program each year.
With the money I raise, I will buy enough thermometers and scissors to teach all my students traditional photography techniques to my students in a darkroom environment.
Please help support the darkroom photography program at our school and give inner-city youth access to this unique creative skill set.
