Scientists and Engineers - Girls Can Too!

My students need biographies of scientists to improve reading and content comprehension, and to inspire everyone to participate in STEM fields.

My Students

Too often my girls will still ask me wide-eyed, "Girls can be ...?" and my boys will declare, "Girls can't do ..." In 2014, there is still the idea that STEM subjects are things girls just aren't interested in.

My students are English Language Learners (ELLs) who live in a low-income district with great diversity.

Our district has the highest number of different languages in the state. To best address our students' needs and interests, we've recently become an Innovation School with a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics, though we include the "A" for the arts) This school-wide shift has sparked a huge interest for STEM-related materials. As a language-based classroom I am finding that most books that deal with the pioneers in STEM fields are primarily about men. STEM fields already have a huge under-representation of women and it is my hope that we can help equalize the playing field!

My Project

While providing my students with positive role-models in the STEM fields, these books will also serve as spring boards for academic-level conversation, improved reading comprehension, increased academic vocabulary and introductions to the many wonders, ideas, and professions they might pursue.

It is our job as educators - whether you are a teacher, a parent, or a friend of schools - not only to prepare our students for the future, but to inspire them.

These books will help show them that they truly can be what they choose to be no matter who they are or what challenges they may face.
