Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is made up of diligent, inspiring, and creative fourth graders with big hearts and analytical minds. They attend school every day with purpose and a desire to learn something new, to discuss what they think, and take pride in their efforts. My students learn in a bilingual community with a high level of family support. They attend our school with growing technology opportunities that enhance their approach, application, and articulation of their knowledge and their new learning. We balance this with creativity and physical opportunities with that support the development of persistence, teamwork, and determination.
My Project
Science is critical part of a fourth grade education. It is a significant time in their schooling that can lead them to thinking analytically, creatively, and metacognitively. Fourth Graders need opportunities to explore, question, investigate, be challenged, and innovate in order to develop and connect scientific concepts to the real world. We need to capture childhood curiosity and engage their natural disposition to know about our Earth, the biology on our earth, and the laws of physics that affect it. They need to be able to explore problems we face and consider possible solutions. Furthermore, students need opportunities to practice engineering and designing solutions through fun and purposeful challenges that incorporates planning, designing, building, testing, revising, and evaluating.
We use our the straw kits in our science lab to experience the engineering and design process first hand while we research, investigate, explore, create, manipulate, and problem solve in teams.
Our space needs updated resources in order to continue supporting student interest, growth, and success in science education.
The science materials requested will further motivate, inspire, and provide access to an incredibly important academic area in education. The materials will support student’s critical thinking skills, give opportunity for creativity, and allow for closer looks into how our world works. Furthermore, the science materials will enhance collaboration, scientific processes as well as the engineering and design process. Using these materials during our science lab time will also support critical groundwork for learning to pose varied and relevant questions, investigate ideas, test our designs, and discover ways to articulate concepts and report findings. “Science is concerned with what is possible while engineering is concerned with choosing, from among the many possible ways.” Richard Hamming
Please consider supporting the enthusiastic learners in my classroom who anxiously await more opportunities to learn about the universe.
