Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Understanding what you read is a key component to understanding Science concepts. Many of my students are reading below grade level. Our current Science books are written in a very complex and a high level, making it very hard for the ESE and ESOL students to comprehend the material read.
My students go to a public elementary school in Florida.
We are a Title 1 school, as a majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. A large population of our students are ESOL 1 so they are non- English or limited English speakers. Although our school is predominately Hispanic, we do have students from many non-Hispanic countries. All of them are, however, very eager to learn and explore the scientific world.
My Project
The Sciencesaurus books I am requesting are smaller sized text books written in a much simpler language. These books have all the concepts we teach in 5th grade but written in a manner that is easier to comprehend. The books have images that are modern to today's students. I believe that using the Sciencesaurus books will make it easier for the ESE and ESOL students to comprehend the material being taught without falling behind because their comprehension is below grade level. In addition to the books, I am requesting Apple iPad cables. We have been using the wonderful iPad received through Donors Choose as part of our small group Science lab sessions. We are now in need of the cables that will enable us to use the iPad more effectively. The students are enjoying the iPad very much!
I truly believe that if the students with learning disabilities are given every opportunity to learn and grow, they will blossom.
My students are very excited about Science and eager to learn more. I want to give them every opportunity I can, as a teacher to make this happen. With your help, I believe we can achieve this!
