Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This proposal is to have a classroom set of "ScienceSaurus" Books for my fifth grade science lab students. Our school does a magnificent job of having science materials available for our students in school. However, we would not have enough funds to be able to provide a class set of these books for each of the 5 fifth grade classes.
I teach at a Title 1 school (90% or more receive free or reduced lunch) and these books will have an immediate impact on the lives of our students. Our fifth grade students take the state mandated "TAKS" test that allows our students to show how much they have learned throughout their elementary school years. Since this is an all-encompassing test, the students need to have been exposed to not only "hands-on" science but also the theoretical part of science, because the TAKS test has no hands-on part to it.
Most of our students have not had access to science books through their whole elementary school career let alone when they go home, thus, in many ways 5th grade becomes a crash course in science. We simply want to make this this crash course a minor impact as opposed to a head-on collision with science, and these books would be of great benefit in this endeavor. In short, these books are what our students need to succeed; not only on a "state mandated exam" but also to truly understand the world around them. If this proposal is funded these books will also be available to all 3rd and 4th grade science classes to ensure that each child will have access to these materials.
Again, thank you for looking at our proposal.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
