My students need 44 earth science books at a variety of reading levels.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Klein's classroom raised $519
This project is fully funded
I am the proud teacher of 32 spunky and motivated 4th graders in a major urban city. My school is extremely diverse both in population and socioeconomic background. We have a high English Language Learner population, as well as over 50% of our student receiving free and reduced lunch.
Teaching science has always been a challenge with a standard textbook. This is a challenge because the material isn't accessible to all students. Students read at many different levels, so I believe it is important that students have access to information about 4th grade science at a level they understand. There are three standards for fourth grade science: In physical science, students need to know that electricity and magnetism are related effects that have many useful applications in everyday life. In life science, they need to know that all organisms need energy and matter to grow. And finally, in earth sciences, students need to know the properties and rocks and minerals, as well as the process that formed them. Now this is no easy stretch with only one book for all students to get this information from. I have students who are still early in English acquisition, and then there is the students who are simply bored by the common text book and needs to be challenged at a higher level. Lucky for me, these range of students have one thing in common. They all love to read.
Reading is empowerment. I need science books fitting the fourth grade curriculum. But not just any science books. Science books that ALL the students in my class can UNDERSTAND! Books that are available for a newcomer student as well as a student who needs to be challenged further than conventional textbooks. I have a classroom of readers, and having a collection of nonfiction books that can help a student who has only been speaking English for a year understand that, "waves, wind, water, and ice shape and reshape Earth's land". I need books that is going to help take that student who loves identifying rock forming minerals and giving him a book that is going to take that love of rocks to the next level.
Your help with these books will continue to help me foster a classroom of equals. Having science books at varying levels will make it possible for ALL my students to further their knowledge of fourth grade science and keep them reading. Your generosity could help many students begin a life long love of science.
