My Students

We are a middle school and high school that provides quality and rigorous individualized educational programs to students with significant challenges and diverse learning styles in a variety of settings that nurture independence, ensure dignity, and support integration into the community.

In our district, self-contained setting, these students require a large amount of staff assistance.

This year, I am teaching Science and Health with several classes of students with Autism.

They have emerging verbal skills or are non-verbal and use the assistance of communication device technology. In addition, the literacy skill level is emerging yet they are in high school. There are also students who are non-readers. They are a diverse group with highly individual needs. The one thread that connects their abilities and interests is technology. They all respond very well to all types of electronic devices.

I have been using photography as a tool to level the playing field in that it builds self-confidence and allows the kids to develop job readiness skills, express themselves in new ways and present their work to the community at large. The program is specifically designed to meet their special needs.

My Project

Students will be introduced to science topics by engaging in a scavenger hunt throughout the school. They will find science vocabulary terms and concepts by searching throughout their classroom, school hallways, in the school yard, and on community walks. They will photograph their findings.

Our students love photography, so we will use photography in science instruction!

Students will take photos of plants and animals, living and nonliving things and even print outs that staff have placed throughout the school building for them to find. Visuals and checklists will support them in their activities.

We will use photography in STEAM lessons. They will photograph their experiments and print out their photos to use in their science journals.
