This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10th grade Earth Science in New York. My school is located in a high needs community where most of the student population is African American.
In Earth Science students have a hard time understanding abstract concepts and spacial relationships. A good example is in the Astronomy unit where students need to understand what causes the phases of the moon. This year I have more special education students and the majority of them are visual learners.
An LCD projector would allow me to include more visual aides and video clips in my lessons so students have a better chance at understanding key concepts on the standardized exam. This is the best way to differentiate my teaching so that more of my students will be successful in science.
Diagrams in a textbook just don't come alive and engage students, but showing them a video clip on how the moon actually revolves around the Earth to create the phases humans see would help to make science more accessible to the students.
