This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I certainly do care about measuring educational results. But what is an 'educational result?' The twinkling eyes of my students, together with their heartfelt and beautifully expressed mathematical arguments are all the results I need." - Keith Devlin
My classroom is located in Washington State at a Title I school.
Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At HV, 80-85% of students qualify for free and reduced-price school lunch. There are so many experiences and learning we wish we could have with our students if only we had the means.
My Project
Next year, I am going to be teaching 60+ 5th/6th graders science and math. I NEED your help to prepare and become a good science teacher! What makes a good science teacher? A good science teacher knows the content, can go deeper, be flexible and explain why something is important.
Please help bring professional development science books into our classroom so I can become the science teacher students deserve and need!
Reasons why we need high-quality science teaching and learning:
1. Science is interesting, important, meaningful, and motivating.
2. Science career opportunities will be important in the future.
3. Science promotes democratic thinking and values.
4. Science builds positive lifelong learning habits, behaviors, and attitudes.
5. Science teaches that knowledge is tentative and that knowledge, theory, and explanation are all part of the learning process.
6. Science builds reading and learning skills.
7. Science helps students to learn and apply mathematical thinking.
8. Science develops teamwork skills.
Now that you know why high-quality science teaching and learning is so IMPORTANT please help bring high-quality books into our classroom to improve my teaching. The awesome books I'm asking for are Picture-Perfect STEM Lessons, 3-5: Using Children's Books to Inspire STEM Learning, Energy (Stop Faking It! Finally Understanding Science So You Can Teach It), Teaching Science Through Trade Books and other great titles below. Thank you in advance for your support!
