My students need materials that will enable them to develop skills that will prepare them for 21st century jobs. STEM (science technology engineering and math) activities can incorporate multiple subject areas as well as social skills.

My Students
I teach in a college town with a VERY wide array of kiddos. I have a few who have very specific learning plans and special needs. Our district includes a variety of demographics and backgrounds. Some of the students in my school come from poverty and many do not speak English.
I have 18 awesome kids who are eager to learn and use their brilliant creative minds.
I have lots of wigglers who love hands on learning. I include a diverse collection of literature and cross curricular projects in my teaching. I love to use STEM (science technology engineering and math) projects to engage and excite my learners. I want to give them everything I can to make them successful, but these activities often require a lot of supplies.
The location of my school is great for walking field trips, and trips to the local university. I want to get my kids out and about to see the "real world." I strive to prepare them to be successful in our constantly changing, 21st century world.
My Project
My dream is to incorporate STEM activities into my student's learning on a regular basis. STEM refers to a challenge that includes science, technology, engineering and math. It is important to provide opportunities for kids to build skills in these areas because their future jobs will most likely be related to these 4 areas. STEM challenges encourage students to use problem solving skills that are present in every day life.
In my class, STEM activities require students to plan, design and build something that will solve a problem by creating a better, more efficient tool.
Often, I will challenge the kids to re-plan their design using fewer materials in order to mimic obstacles adults face in their jobs. The future is looking for people who can be efficient and work around problems such as a lack of resources.
Some of my favorite STEM activities involve simple machines and structural creations. This aligns with the science standards I teach in 3rd grade. The materials I am requesting in this project will enable my students to take their projects to the next level. I am looking forward to seeing them unlock a whole new level of creativity.
