My Students

My students and I engage together as a team in learning. It is a two way street where together we learn via an interactive notebook. I provide the input--teacher directed notes--and I guide the output--student's understanding. The students write, draw, and engage in lively discussions.

My students are a diverse group of learners.

I have English Language Learners (ELL), honors students, and everyone else in between all in the same class together. They are extremely social, helpful, and welcoming of a wide range of ethnic cultures and backgrounds. I honor their ways of learning by providing opportunities for them to think for themselves first and then engage in discussions with one another where they teach and learn from each other. Our middle school includes grades sixth, seventh, and eighth with a population of around 650 students and 42 full-time teachers. Around 42% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

My Project

My students will use the glue, color pencils, and construction paper to create their output for their interactive notebooks by making foldables, which help them to reinforce vocabulary and interpret/analyze graphs--speed graphs for example during our force and motion unit for my 6th graders and Earth's atmospheric layers for my 8th graders. The scales will be used to calculate density, a topic interwoven throughout the school year. Also, my health students can use the scales to recognize the amount of salt, sugar, and other items are in their food when we discuss our unit on nutrition and human health. The pipe cleaners will be used when we discuss the electromagnetic spectrum. Students will create their own electromagnetic spectrum to learn about the wavelength and amplitude using the pipe cleaner. The stamps are great to reinforce positive behavior by stamping their work completed in their interactive notebooks. The hooks will be used to keep student supply bags accountable.

My students are critical thinkers and I enjoy challenging them to their full potential.

They appreciate the use of supplies they typically do not get access to, such as the scales. I am teaching them to be critical thinkers because I feel it is important to guide them to become global citizens. These materials contribute to their success and joy in learning, but also to their self-esteem. They feel empowered to create and see what they are capable of producing. Thank you for your consideration.
