W. B. Yeats said "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire," and I believe students are inherently engaged and invested when they learn though seeing and doing. My students need detailed demonstrations, visual aids, and models!
Life science class is both accessible and engaging for my students, because it's all about them!
But regardless of how interested they are in the subject, breaking down higher-level scientific texts, reports, and papers is daunting for my students. I want to show them their peers work, compare and contrast successful and less successful lab reports and teach them how to edit. I want my students to see science come alive through engaging photographs and hands-on demos!
My Project
Were you able to closely observe a cow eye in school? What about the insides of a frog? Were you able to closely examine a fossil to determine its evolutionary history? In my classroom, my students will be able to do all of these things, because the Elmo Document Camera will allow my students to see and engage with science is a new way. My students will be able to work with graphs, images, and papers from scientific journals in detail. No longer will the copy machine make these images gray and dark. While I have a projector in my classroom, this visual presenter will enable my students to follow along with me and look at the exact same page, so they are able to build and hone their critical thinking skills. I will be able to teach them to successfully analyze sources, lab reports, and papers though modeling. These documents will allow my students to learn from others, as we compare stronger conclusions with weaker in order to better each student's abilities.
I aim to make my students life-long learners, critical thinkers, and explorers.
They need the appropriate resources and technology to visualize, engage with, understand, and analyze concepts and scientific documents. Having an excellent visual aid will enable my students to thrive as scientists by enhancing and supplementing their educational experience and enabling them to become involved with the subject. These students are the future engineers and scientists, let's engage them!
