Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students engage in learning in an urban, Title I school that serves almost 1000 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Most of our children come from low-income households and receive free breakfast, lunch and snack. My classroom usually hosts twenty-nine energetic and resilient children from diverse backgrounds. Due to Covid-19 there will be many major changes, but one thing that will not change is that multiple students in my class will receive one or more specialized services including: Tier 3 interventions, special education services, and services for English language learners. Despite the challenges we face in and out of school, I'm confident that the students in our third grade classroom will have a zest for learning and be excited learn and grow, practice skills and strategies and have engaging class meetings.
My Project
Students in my classroom will no longer be able to share books in the classroom library or share physical center supplies to work on math problems. Having a Scholastic News subscription will allow each student to have access to a wide range of science and social studies articles which can be disposed of when their assignments are complete. Furthermore, Scholastic News provides students with an inspiring worldview of how other children their age are facing challenges, impacting their communities and activating their genius. Scholastic News articles can also be accessed online for students during remote learning.
As we work to prepare to facilitate student learning in a variety of delivery modes, one thing is certain our priority is safety first.
I have already spent hundreds of dollars of my own money, buying notebooks, crayons, pencils and storage boxes, etc. to eliminate the need for students to share supplies. Having 20 more sets of cuisenaire rods will ensure that each student in our class has their own set to use in school or to take home if the need arises due to a remote learning mandate. The rods will be used for hands on learning across the mathematical operations. Having these two items in our classroom for every student will go a long way in assisting quality instruction regardless of location and promoting safe social distancing practices in our classroom.
