This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Science is everywhere! And, keeping it in our school curriculum allows young students to learn about their world in an exciting way. Performing scientific experiments inspires creativity and thought. Some quality scientific supplies are needed for these hands-on investigative types of projects.
My students are third and fourth graders.
They live and come to school in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in a major city in Eastern Pennsylvania. Staying in school and finishing their education is vital for them. Our wonderful school happens to have a science lab, however, the school district has no room in the shrinking budget for science supplies. What makes the students really interested in science is doing actual experiments. It gets messy and fun. But, anything that encourages them to want to learn, such as using cool science stuff, is helpful to what we are trying to accomplish, to keep them engaged so that they will finish their education.
My Project
My students need supplies such as various magnets, prisms and owl pellets, that will enhance their hands-on scientific learning investigations. The owl pellets help the students to understand life cycles, the food chain and the importance of respecting wildlife. Life on Earth will be very different for their generation, and we need to prepare them scientifically for the changes. The prisms, magnets and bulbs will be used to support our physical science projects, such as building an electric circuit or understanding how an electromagnet works. Many of the materials we use for our experiments are household and recycled items. We try to be practical and do most of the shopping at the dollar store or at yard sales. But the items that I am requesting are the "wish list" items, that if we only had them, how much more authentic our investigations would be.
My students are bright and inquisitive.
By having some better quality science supplies, their learning experience could easily become so much more excellent. Please help me to help my students enjoy scientific learning. Who knows, maybe one of my students will go on to become a famous world renowned scientist, solving one of Earth's major challenges.
