This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine sitting in science class and wanting to view the microscopic world in front of you, but available equipment is in need of another electrical outlet or unable to view a 3-D object. Hopes of becoming a knowledgeable scientist have been eliminated!
My fifth grade students are highly enthusiastic about challenges and have made goals of scoring a perfect 600 on the CA State Exams.
They are high achievers in need of higher level thinking experiences. They are a fun-loving, creative, and dedicated group of learners coming from primarily Latino families in a lower socioeconomic community located in suburban California. Our school has about 1000 students in a PreK-5 environment where free lunch is a standard.
My Project
With a larger class size of 32 and the budget cutbacks, my students are left without proper equipment to truly enjoy science investigations. With a digital microscope they would be able to not only view 3-D objects, but get a close-up view of the specimens in chemistry and the environment. They will also be able to share these discoveries with their classmates and capture screen shots to add to reports. I believe that the science board games will enhance their mastery of the science standards needed to score highly on the state tests.
Getting that "WOW!
Look at this!" statement from students can only lead to further questions and inquiry. The quest for knowledge and motivation to investigate something further is exactly what I want to instill into my students. Donations to this project will allow my students to have access to a microscopic world and also a way to reinforce science standards in a fun, game format. A spark of inquiry will develop into a love of learning. Who knows what discoveries they will make in the future?
