Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a culturally diverse neighborhood in Florida. Many of the students at our school come from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Columbia, and Mexico. More than 90 percent of students that attend our school qualify for free and reduced lunches. Many come from monolingual homes where both parents work to support their family. Some students take care of younger siblings after school while their parents work. For these students, education is their family's top priority and a way to break the cycle of poverty.

My Project

In second grade, we use rocks for different activities and to satisfy multiple standards. One activity that the students really love is sorting rocks by attributes. We also use them to compare weights. I am always amazed at how excited my students are to see different types of rocks.

Did you know that some rocks have sparkles while others are dull?

Did you know that some are powdery and fall apart easily while others are very strong? Did you know that some rocks have air holes and others contain fossils? These are things that my students discover by examining examples of rocks. They use their senses to sort them according to their attributes and record their observations.

Students are also excited to discover that not all rocks are heavy. Rocks with air holes are lighter than rocks that are solid. Rocks that are strong are heavier than rocks that are powdery. Hands-on experiences are required for students to make these discoveries on their own.
