Science Rocks!

Science rocks! Teaching hands-on, engaging science lessons are how my students learn best. They love doing science labs, gathering data, and researching their driving questions. I teach a large and diverse group of second grade students, including English as a second language and exceptional education students.

Our state has just updated new state standards for our grade level. We will be teaching several units of study that are new to second grade and are lacking the materials for students to meet and exceed these new standards. We will be focusing on Earth structures including rocks and soil and we have no tools for the students to use to explore this area.

In order for my students to not only meet, but exceed the new state standards for inquiry science in Earth structures, my students need some hands on science equipment. With a rock collection, students will be able to see a variety of rock samples found in our area and in other parts of the United States. They will have materials to use when experimenting to ask driving questions about as well as to experiment with to help them draw conclusions about the world around them. They will have the opportunity to sort and classify the rock samples (as well as samples students bring in from their neighborhoods) using Venn diagram sorting trays. With these sorting trays, students can see the things that these rocks have in common and things that make them different. With nonfiction "research books" students will have the opportunity to research and test to see if their hypothesis can be proven correct during their lab time. These materials will help Earth structures come alive to students as they compare types of rocks and test to see where soil comes from.

Your help will allow my students to have the chance to explore these new areas of science in a meaningful way, making the most of their education and exceeding their new state standards.
