This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Finding something positive in a 70 year-old middle school building is challenging in itself, but not having the basic lab supplies makes it even harder. I want my students to feel special and to believe they are worthy of what others might consider a given. Please help us!

Some might think that everything in Texas is bigger and better, and in some ways it is.

But my inner-city students are surrounded by decrepit apartments, gang activity and very little to look forward to unless they can find the strength to do what no one says they can: succeed academically and get out of the gang-ridden area in which they live. Our old, falling apart school is one of the few places they can go to that gives them the comfort, support and nurturing they crave. Many beg to stay after school for tutoring and many volunteer to come Saturday school just to stay away from the neighborhood problems. We haven't won a football game in years, but we all show up and continue to cheer in unison. We are a team and wear our red and black proudly even when other schools taunt and laugh at us. This isn't a school just any teacher could or would choose for their home, but we choose to give our hearts, time and talent because of these amazing kids. I am so proud to be one of them!

My Project

Having materials for hands-on experiments and activities is vital to learning in the science lab. Without them, my students cannot see and test for themselves the luster, malleability, hardness and streak of minerals they are required to sample. The only minerals and rocks we have are what we can find on the playground and that makes experimenting with other minerals dull (pun intended!) We need a mineral kit to help test several different minerals. What a difference it makes when students can see with their own eyes and physically test the minerals themselves. The kits and minerals I have ordered would make learning about minerals more meaningful and unforgettable to the students!

As you can see, the mineral kits and rock samples are much needed in order to provide an opportunity for more hands-on learning which is known to be beneficial in every area of learning.
