My students need science books to inspire independent reading and researching of topics of great interest to them.

My Students

My students come from all over the globe to learn in a small and aging school. Our neighborhood is in a huge city with a high number of refugees and energy employees. The diverse ethnicity in the class models the reality of our society, and I love seeing it work in real time!

Many of our students arrive in the United States with absolutely no supplies.

They learn how to eat in a cafeteria, and how to hold a pencil. This is their first introduction to books and the alphabet. Meanwhile, they are learning 2nd grade science concepts. We have two aquariums and a working garden and butterfly habitats.

My Project

Quality resources such as National Geographic books for children will draw low performing students into reading. Full color photos of the topic will aid English Language Learners in their quest to read and learn about animals and how things work.

Imagine wanting to do your best in a language you don't understand.

Frustration can be overcome with these specific resources and a community who believes in student achievement. These well written books with photographs and captions will support all levels of reading and inspire confidence in all students.

Learners will be inspired to write their own booklets and reports on topics from these books. Production as young writers will move them forward in reaching their goals.
