I teach high school science in metropolitan NY. My students are very diverse. This year I teach ESL students. Some of them just came to this country and some, even though born here, are still struggling with their reading and writing skills. Most of my students do not have a computer at home.
My students speak different languages: Urdu, Bengali, Arabic, Uzbek, Russian, Spanish, Chinese and Georgian.
They are trying really hard to learn English in class, but it is taking a lot of time to find and translate words using the dictionaries. High school students are expected to be able to do science related research using the Internet, but most of my students cannot afford to buy computers.
"Google Translate" is a very useful tool that I use in class. I also show my students how to find articles using Internet.
My personal computer is not enough to engage students in computer related research, and I would like to have one more computer in my classroom.
My Project
This Apple computer will be used by students in my classroom for researching articles or translating texts. Students will be working in groups, and one of the groups will be sharing the computer. Groups will be taking turns using the computer and discussing their findings with each other.
The computer will be also used for power points, animations and practice for the Regents exams. Students will also learn how to conduct the research using the key terms and identify the main idea and supporting details in the articles.
Computer literacy is a very important part of helping my students learn English and how to explore scientific topics.
This computer in my classroom will allow my students to have an access to Google Translate, to research scientific topics and write research based projects.
I hope my students will learn the basic skills needed to use the computer and become fascinated with new scientific discoveries.
