This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the High School for Environmental Studies in New York City, we offer a science research class. Students can start taking the class their freshman year and continue throughout high school. The goal of the courses is to expose students to scientific concepts starting freshman year with observations and individual experiments.
This year, some of our freshman did experiments involving tadpoles and environmental changes, the effect of insulin on daphnia heartrate, and the impact of pH changes on damselfly development. Through sophomore year, students research individual topics of interest and reach out to scientists in the New York City area for additional topic information. This year some of our sophomores researched topics including Alzheimer's, Melanoma, Wetland Restoration, Coral Reefs and Sea Turtles. Junior and senior year, students are placed into labs with mentor scientists doing actual research. The year ends with a student-run science symposium where students present their research using PowerPoint presentations and presentation boards. At the symposium, students create the invitations and programs, organize a dinner and decorate the classrooms. The symposium provides an opportunity for parents, staff and students to learn about what our students have accomplished throughout the year.
The skills learned during the years in the science research program are ones that most students do not have the opportunity to learn about until college. This course is very computer presentation heavy and without a projector, students have a difficult time sharing their knowledge. Students prepare many PowerPoint presentations which help students learn computer and presentation skills. Ending the year at the science symposium allows the students to reflect on all of their hard work and gives them an awesome sense of accomplishment.
