My Students

Keeping the creativity and fun in education is crucial. Having the tools needed to start the year off right is pivotal in determining how the rest of the year will flow. I don't want my students to be at a disadvantage because the budget no longer allots money for classroom supplies.

We are one of four all-girl public schools in New York City with students ranging from 6th to 12th grades.

These girls come from low income areas where the high school graduation rates are on a decline. Our goal is to empower these young ladies by providing them with a strong education and to help them realize that college is more than just a dream, it is their future. My students are motivated and dedicated young women. They love to be engaged in science and exploratory activities. I want to give them every advantage that I can to do so.

My Project

I am requesting supplies that the students and I will use to make our lessons more engaging and creative. Due to budget cuts, the school is no longer supplying basics like construction paper and chart paper. The construction paper, crayons, markers, glue, staplers, scissors, and the rest of these supplies will be used to create innovative and colorful science projects. Adding arts to the sciences helps students visualize science content which helps them to better understand the curriculum. With these materials my students will be able to construct simple machines, draw and explain the rock cycle, and turn our classroom in to an interactive rainforest that we can use to study and learn from.

My students are part of an all girls 6-12 school in urban New York.

Many of these girls are forced to grow up quicker than they should due to stigmas and/or family obligations. They will see many of their friends incarcerated, become pregnant and drop out of school, or worse. For many of them, education will be their only escape from a world full of poverty and crime. Our school demonstrates to these girls that, yes, they can achieve and exceed even their own expectations!
