As we move our reading and spelling instruction from a focus on memorization to a focus on the science of reading, we recognize the need for more intentional, adaptable instruction. Research has shown that letter tiles and manipulatives are in invaluable tool to help students recognize spelling patterns in words. We plan to use letter tiles and magnetic dry erase folders to create an interactive, tactile word work mat that each student can use to help them decode and encode any word, regardless of their skill level.
These word work mats will be used daily in small group instruction.
Students will also be able to use these word work mats independently as needed. The letter tiles can also be used in many word work games to make word work study more enjoyable and play-based.
