Cellular respiration is a tough topic for some students to grasp. This hands-on lab makes the topic engaging for students as they compare yeast fermentation using different types of sugar. This spirals student learning to also review our previous topic of macromolecules, including sugars, having different structures and functions. Students will be able to visualize respiration through the collection of gas products in the balloon and with pH color changes they perform. Students get excited to measure the alcohol content produced by the yeast in their experiment using a breathalyzer to measure the ethyl alcohol produced. They can relate this to everyday processes such as yeast in baking and see the connection with photosynthesis. What once was a boring and complex topic, will become an engaging lesson that ties together many biology topics and life lessons using these materials.
