My Students

Like many young children, my kindergarten students greatly enjoy science time. They love observing bugs and plants, rolling cars down ramps and predicting which will reach first, and reading books to find out as much as they can about sharks and other frightening creatures.

My students are an energetic bunch who are most engaged during hands-on learning and playtime.

They are kind, compassionate friends who tend to one another when something is amiss. They make my heart melt every single day.

My diverse, primarily low-income school is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco. Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! The community bond shows through as students giggle and play together throughout the day.

My Project

Last year I gave each child a pile each of marshmallows and toothpicks and challenged them to try to build the tallest tower in class. I was amazed with what they came up with! As they worked through that process over multiple days, many students began to notice that they needed a wide base. Some even tried putting multiple toothpicks into one marshmallow to give the structure more strength. They made these realizations with very little help from me.

Children are natural learners who need time to experiment with open-ended materials.

They learn so much more through trying, failing, and trying again, than they do when they are taught facts lecture-style.

Despite all the benefits of engineering challenges, it can be difficult implementing them frequently because of the time and materials required. The Lakeshore Learning STEM bundle would give me the tools to give students these opportunities all year long. Not only do the activities span across multiple science units, but some of them also integrate some of our favorite fairy tales. I am so excited to see how children end up building a chair that is strong enough to prevent Goldilocks from breaking it! As students become comfortable with the practice of solving imaginary problems, I hope to guide them to the realization that they have the power to solve real-life problems as well. While I want my students to enjoy school and find success in kindergarten, I have greater dreams for them to be happy and productive members of our society.
