This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My kindergarten scientists are eager to begin to explore color, light, and shadows. This is very difficult to be done without a light source in the classroom. With your help my students would be able to use a large wooden light table during their science experiments and investigations.

I teach in a high poverty charter school in New York City in which we do not have sufficient materials to teach relevant and engaging science lessons. According to the national science standards, young children are expected to study light and shadows as a part of their early science instruction. My current situation has made this very difficult. My classroom does not have any windows which means that we do not have any natural light to explore in our classroom. In addition, we do not have a safe outdoor space to go to explore light in the natural world. We do not have a playground or yard.

In order to solve this problem, I am requesting a safe and age-appropriate light table where my students can come to experiment and investigate the scientific principles of light and shadow. When they come to the table, they will be able to use various materials to manipulate the light and to create shadows in different ways. By experimenting they will form hypotheses that we will discuss as a group and further test using scientific methodology. This is all an essential part of our early childhood science curriculum.

With your support, my kindergarten students will be able to actively explore light, color, and shadows using safe and thought-provoking materials.
