Science Materials for Grade 1 Special Education

My students need hands-on science materials for Grade 1 Common Core Standards. They need books, exploratory science kits, visual charts and a place to organize materials

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Smith's classroom raised $630

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students learn in a variety of approaches to teaching. They need hands on approaches, Visualizations and Several Trials to learn new concepts. Introduction to Science is always a fun way to incorporate language, writing and math lessons.

My classroom is a substantially separate special education class that has students in Grade 1 and 2.

The students in my class have a variety of disabilities such as Autism, Developmental Delays, Down Syndrome and Communication Disorders. The children come from an Urban District with a high poverty and English Language Learner Population. My schools funding has been slashed considerably. Unfortunately I am left to buy materials that are desperately needed in my classroom. The clinical make up of my class changes year to year so I am always purchasing new items to fit the specialized needs of each child.

My Project

The students will use the materials in large group and center work. This Spring we will be discussing Life Science Animal and Plant Parts and Parent/Offspring Behavior. The children require a variety of approaches to learning. We will use books, visual charts with hands-on materials, and Science Kits. It would be extremely helpful to have one work station where all the Science Materials are kept so the students can independently obtain what they will need for that day.

The donations for this project will help my students to continue to be exposed to the regular education curriculum while being able to communicate with typical peers to discuss Science experiments.

The district that I am in has had our budget slashed drastically and we have been told that we will have more budget cuts for next year. I thank all of you that are willing to help out my students.
