This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students enjoy science books but often struggle reading them. As part of my daily schedule I use daily 5 which includes listing to reading. Listening to books on CD and following along in a book helps the students understand and develop fluency, learn academic vocabulary.

I teach in a school with the majority of my students being English language learners.

In my class of 21 students, 16 are bilingual with only 1 being proficient in reading and writing in English. It is also a high poverty school, but my students work hard and my goal is to help my students become stronger readers.

My Project

These books will allow the students to learn about science by listening and following along. It is important for the students to hear books being read fluently and using academic vocabulary. This is beneficial for struggling readers because they can read and hear the words at the same time to improve their fluency and vocabulary.

This will allow me to provide more nonfiction stories in my library, encourage the students to learn and understand more academic vocabulary, and help develop their interest in science to help them in their nonfiction writing.
