Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kids love science, yet they only come to Science lab once a week. These kids have had limited exposure to science. Center materials can be checked out of the lab, so science fun may continue daily. I would like for our students to develop their English and social interactions through science.

Many of my students are ELL and ESL and have very few experiences.

Center activities continue to be the extra mile needed for achievement. My school is located in a low income area of town. The families have few opportunities to give and few resources to work with. The majority of the students there are on free or reduced lunch. The community is classified as a low income one. The parents are eager to help, but they are limited in what they can offer. English is a struggle for most of our parents. The majority of the students are tested in English, so this presents a problem. The students are hard working, and I like to use science as a hook to motivate them. Once motivated, they are open to other subjects. The school has been at its current location for over seventy five years. Generations of students have attended. It is a family oriented school with years of investment in education at our neighborhood school.

My Project

STEM which stands for Science,Technology, Engineering and Math, is the current wave in education. Our students have to be exposed to as many STEM activities as possible. The goal is to have as many prepared folder games or explorations as possible, readily available for them We want the students to see how the four areas are so intermingled and seamless. The students should be able to work project-based group activities that flow from one area to another to reach the conclusion. They will then be able to present a final product that expresses multiple genres of learning. The work should be a fun endeavor for all involved.

These materials will equip our lab to be ready!

The students will be able to walk right in and get started. My school is limited in funds, and teachers are often told to do with what we have or purchase it ourselves. Our students will smile with the ease and availability of materials. Learning will be more fun and more meaningful!
