My students need basic science tools like 40 rulers, 40 graduated cylinders, and 40 sets of protective eye wear to actively participate in hands-on science investigations.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Hookim's classroom raised $581

My Students
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 look forward to coming to the science lab each week to participate in hands-on investigations that align with our curriculum. In order to do this properly, these students rely on the classroom being fully stocked with the tools and materials needed to be successful.
Many of our students come from low income families and are often immigrants who are new to the country, and the English language.
One of the things that they can rely on is that science is a subject that involves all their senses and can showcase their abilities despite a language barrier.
My Project
The students in grade 3 and 4 will use these basic materials (rulers, graduated cylinders, protective goggles) to grow an understanding of their respective curriculum with regard to matter, energy transfer, and basic measurement as well as prepare for the grade 4 NYS science exam. Those in grade 5 will be able to show practical application of these concepts prior to graduation. All they have gained having been exposed to the materials will serve to better prepare them for the more advanced STEM labs available in the middle schools they will attend.
Students learn by doing.
To read from a textbook, especially for those students who are struggling with the English language or those who have various learning disabilities, does not benefit them the way conducting hands-on investigations would. Being immersed in an experiment that involves concrete models that uses all your senses has shown that students perform better and learn more than simply reading abstract concepts alone. Please consider contributing to their potential successes.
