Science Lab S.O.S!

Help me give my students items like vinyl balls, cleaning towels, and batteries for the supplies needed to stock our new Science Lab. We need supplies to create hands on learning for 7th and 8th grade science experiments.

My Students

My students are from an inner-city section on the West Side of Cleveland, known for unsafe streets and where 100% of the student body qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. We focus on making safety one of our top concerns at school because a feeling of safety allows you to focus on learning while at school.

My middle school students are working to succeed in education with obstacles that we are trying to overcome to be able to match our counterparts in more affluent areas.

I would like my students to be able to learn compete with others in a global society, and be able to feel a sense of accomplishment when they meet their goals. I have looped with my students for 5 years now, and have been lucky to watch them grow. I would love to keep giving them advantages they would not have access to without assistance.

My Project

Help us stock our new Science Lab so we are ready for all our hands on experiments for the entire school year. Most of these items are found in local stores, but the amount needed is too much to purchase yearly, or to request that the students bring in the supplies.

These materials will help teach concepts such as Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science.

We will use the towels to demonstrate tectonic plate movements. We will use the string, vinyl balls, and balloons to show how Newton's Forces work. We will use the pennies and the batteries to show magnetism and to build our own electromagnets. We will use the buttons to show how the periodic table is sorted by element classifications, and to show how to use a dichotomous key to classify living things.

We will be able to store these materials in our lab to be used when needed. Having the supplies in the classroom will help us to be prepared. This will also allow enough supplies that all students will be able to participate by doing their own experiments, instead of just watching me conduct one experiment for the class to observe.

After all, science is much more memorable when you get to experience the learning, instead of just watching.
