Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th and 6th grade science at an inner city dual language school in Connecticut. Our students take classes in both languages with the goal of being fully bilingual at the end of their 8th grade year.

This year, our school was fortunate enough to have a new building built for us. My students were so excited to have a science lab where we could perform experiments. In the new building budget, there WAS funds allocated for supplies, but that was the first thing that was cut where there was a shortfall. We have a beautiful space to work in, but no supplies to work with. I've purchased as much as I could on my own to get us by, but right now, my own personal funds are low. I want my students to get the hands on science experience to hopefully get them excited about science as a career down the road.

We need some basic supplies to help us, especially in the areas of measurement. Right now, all we have is one triple beam balance that we use for everything, (which I picked up at a tag sale) but it's too difficult to use when it comes to smaller measurements. Also something my students are having difficultly in is seeing the difference in varying amounts of liquid measurements. To have both metric and customary units, the students will be able to determine differences on their own. Hands on work in science helps to fuel their minds!

Your donation can help mold my students' scientific thinking and bring about the future scientists of tomorrow! You can make that possible by funding our lab!
