My Students

I work at an International Baccalaureate (IB) school located on Chicago's west side. It is a public school that serves Kindergarten through 8th grade. Although small,(serving a population of approximately 300 students) we offer a wide variety of programs and experiences to our students. Students participate in after school activities and sports such as robotics, basketball, track, soccer, student council, and after school tutoring in math, reading, and algebra. We offer a STEM/Design class and participate in Hour Of Code. In addition, as part of our Social Emotional Learning program (SEL), students in grades K-5 receive yoga classes through Mindful Practices.

As the middle school science teacher, I am tasked with exposing my students to a rigorous and exciting science curriculum.

This can be quite the challenge when teaching in a low income, high poverty neighborhood riddled with violence. Despite these challenges, my students love to learn and come to school every day prepared to break down misconceptions and challenge normative ideas. My goal is to provide my students with as much exposure and opportunities in STEM so that they can go on and pursue higher education and careers in STEM.

My Project

The materials selected for this project are the basic lab equipment needed to run my middle school science classroom. Glassware breaks when students are engaging in authentic science experiences and it can be costly to constantly replace them. In addition to basic glassware, the list includes calculators, a first aid kit and a lens cleaning station that allows for a well-run class.

My goal as a science teacher is to make sure that my students are fully immersed in SCIENCE by DOING science.

With a fully funded project, my students can "make mistakes and get messy" in their discovery process.
