My Students

"We need four units of O neg blood, STAT!" My students hear things like this on TV all the time. Learning about what it means is a crucial part of studying human anatomy & physiology.

My students are 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in Wisconsin.

They're enrolled in my anatomy & physiology course because they want to be health care providers or because they just plain love science classes. The cool thing about science class, of course, is the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning through labs. In this case, though, there's a double whammy: 1) human blood isn't safe to use in the classroom, and 2) we have a serious school budget crisis, which means we don't have the ability to purchase this on our own.

My Project

Human blood is a fascinating topic. From blood donations and transfusions, to plasma donation, to Rh incompatibility during pregnancy, there are a lot of blood-related questions that my students will encounter during their lives. I truly love teaching them about the genetics of blood type, blood cell surface antigens, and type incompatibilities. But no matter how excited I am about teaching it, without the ability to actually look at blood cells and mix different types, it's still just a teacher talking and drawing things on a chalkboard. The ability to really engage my students with a lab like this would be amazing. The students would use a simulated blood substance to investigate different cell antigens and incompatibility under the microscope, thus allowing them to understand why the Rh factor is so important during pregnancy, and why medical dramas always call for O negative blood instead of AB positive. It's real, it's relevant, and it's biology!

My students are tomorrow's health care providers, and allowing them to have this hands-on experience with blood would give them a great head start in their careers.

It would allow me to give them the best possible lab experience and make my class even more exciting and relevant. Please help!
