Science: It's Everywhere!

Help me give my students a compost container and other resources that will help their science lessons come to life!

My Project

I teach at a special school in the upstate of South Carolina and my classroom is made up of 8 incredibly bright students with varying intellectual and physical disabilities. All of them are creative and fun, ready to learn, and determined to explore the world around them. We are excited to dive head-first into learning together this year!

Because this group of students is so eager for adventure, we will be using tons of hands-on experiments throughout the year to explore a wide variety of exciting science topics.

We will investigate our Solar System, the Water Cycle, our atmosphere, soil and streams, chemical reactions, gravity and density, energy and motion, plants, animals, insects, and tons more!

The products I have selected will be directly used to assist with projects and lessons we will be completing in class. Whether we are recording our daily Compost Container observations, using stalks of celery in beakers full of food coloring and water to observe capillary action, or sliding on our safety goggles and using some baking soda and vinegar to explore chemical reactivity, we will be working together with the resources we receive to take a closer look at the intricacies of our environment.

In addition to exploring these topics, students will create models and visual representations of their learning. Adapted crayons will aid students with fine motor challenges, watercolor supplies will allow their creativity to flourish, and a massive amount of glue and water mixed with recycled newspaper and a few balloons will make for a beautiful planetary display.

My ultimate goal is to teach my students that curiosity is powerful and that there is always more to explore. These resources will help them investigate the world around us, and discover that science is everywhere!
