My Students

A lot of a typical day in my classroom revolves around books. I read to the class to introduce a lesson or to warm up before math. Books are a great way to get information into their minds. By the end of the year, I want them to better understand the world around them and be asking more questions.

My students are bright, motivated scientists.

They come from loving, supportive families who are working hard to live and work in the Bay Area. Most families have two parents who are working full-time (or more). While the students could happily sit and listen to me read or answer questions about the world all day, they need a more well rounded education that offers multimedia support. They love to tell me and each other what they have learned about the world. They are eager to read and for non-fiction books they can read to each other. Sometimes, the greatest joy is sharing a non-fiction fact that you learned with a friend. Our school is a very tight knit community. The teachers are very positive and supportive with each other. We share ideas freely and try to solve each others problems. The parents at our school are very interested in their children's education but they don't always have the time or means to support it.

My Project

These scholastic magazines will give them nonfiction information about the world around them. The materials I am requesting are periodical magazines from Scholastic designed for Kindergarten. Let's Find Out is a weekly paper that has color pictures and discusses weather, plants, seasons, even germs and more. Science Spin is a monthly magazine that aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards. Each student is given their own individual copy of the magazine. It allows them to explore it alone but also enjoy sharing it as a group. Both have online support and lessons. The magazine has interactive games and activities that the students can do on the Smart Board in the classroom. It will also give them reading materials that they can keep. One of the greatest struggles in science education in America is that the students struggle with the reading level in the texts.

Donations to this project will help me teach science in a fun, engaging way.

It will allow me to incorporate the new science standards known as the Next Generation Science Standards with having to create my own materials or lessons. Since the magazines can be taken home, it will also enable me to connect families to what we are learning about. The magazines teach about apples in September and pumpkins in October. It will connect the world they know to the science world.
