My Students

I am a special education teacher that works with middle school aged students that have intellectual and/or emotional disabilities. My students are at an impressionable age where lessons taught now will impact their future. Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 and the necessary social distancing requirements, the role hands-on learning plays in the classroom has diminished if not been replaced with Chromebooks and hours staring at a computer screen. Many of my students are kinesthetic learners meaning they learn best by doing and solving problems in a hands-on manner. Instead of listening to me lecture, I want to engage them with materials to solve a problem or to create something which will result in increases in learning and recollection.

My Project

Science is involved in everything we do. Whether we are cooking, driving, or playing, we can do so because of science. It is our superpower and I want to provide my students with the opportunity to harness their superpower with the use of hands-on activities. Want to fly? With an activity tub labeled Force & Motion, students can engage with the forces of flight. Want x-ray vision like Superman? Activity tubs like Matter and Electricity can help students understand the relationship between light and matter. Do you want to read minds? These Learning Science Activity Tubs will help students learn how to listen with all their senses.

Hands-on learning is key to helping students have a lifelong love of learning.

When students do something, they are engaged in active learning. They are practicing skills and creating knowledge. The student becomes more engaged in their learning and as a result, test scores increase, and greater academic achievements are made. With the funding of this project, my students will be closer to developing a love of science and understanding that it is their superpower.
